Seminar on ‘An Evaluation of Human Resources of IT Departments in Banks of Bangladesh’ held at BIBM

Dhaka, 13 November, 2019:
A half day long seminar was held at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) on 13 November, 2019, in its auditorium. Dr. Prashanta Kumar Banerjee, Professor & Director (RD&C) of BIBM delivered welcome address. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Director General of BIBM chaired the Program.
A paper titled ‘An Evaluation of Human Resources of IT Departments in Banks of Bangladesh’ was presented in the seminar by Md. Mahbubur Rahman Alam, Associate Professor of BIBM. Other members of the research team  are Md. Shihab Uddin Khan, Associate Professor of BIBM; Kaniz Rabbi, Assistant Professor of BIBM; Md. Foysal Hasan, Lecturer of BIBM; Md. Shamsur Rahman Chowdhury, Chief Information Officer of  National Credit and Commerce Bank Ltd.

A good number of participants including senior bank executives, academicians, media representatives, faculty members of BIBM took part in the seminar.
S.M. Moniruzzaman,  Chairman of BIBM Executive Committee and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank was present in the seminar as the chief guest. Barkat-e-Khuda, Dr.  Muzzafer Ahmed Chair Professor of BIBM & Former  Professor of Dhaka University; Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, Supernumerary Professor of BIBM & Former Managing Director of  Pubali Bank Limited; Md. Yasin Ali, Former Supernumerary Professor of BIBM; Mohammad Shams-Ul Islam,Managing Director & CEO of Agrani Bank Ltd.;  Abul Kashem Md. Shirin, Managing Director & CEO of Dutch Bangla Bank Ltd.; Debdulal Roy, Executive Director (Programming), Bangladesh Bank; Dr. Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, Former Professor, Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of University of Dhaka spoke among others at the event.

According to the study, a big portion of banks have been facing a lot of problems regarding IT employee management due to lack of long term vision, proper planning and initiatives, shortage of manpower and advanced training. To overcome these problems, bank should allocate certain portion of their annual profit for ICT HR development budget.

Deputy Governor said, human resources of Information Technology department are considered the most important assets of a bank. The operational success and business goal of a bank mostly depend on the performance of the IT department. A strong IT department with skilled manpower and good governance is therefore highly required. Employees of the department are required to be transformed into human resources with adequate knowledge, skills and competencies. 
All panelists are agreed upon that- A specialized Information Technology Institute may be set up for the purpose of Research Development and Consultancy in the area of Banking and Financial Technology pf our country like IDRBT establish by RBI.
In the concluding speech, Director General of BIBM said, output of the study along with opinions and observations made today will help BB to take future actions.
