Research Workshop on “Use of Information Technology in Enhancing Efficiency of Internal Control System” held at BIBM

Dhaka, 29 July, 2019:
A half day long research workshop was held at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) on 29th July, 2019, in its auditorium. Md. Nazimuddin, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank and Director General of BIBM delivered welcome address. Dr. Barkat-e-Khuda, Dr. Muzaffer Ahmed Chair Professor of BIBM & Former  Professor of Dhaka University Chaired the Program.  The program was inaugurated  by S.M. Moniruzzaman, Chairman of BIBM Executive Committee and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank.
A paper titled “Use of Information Technology in Enhancing Efficiency of Internal Control System” was presented in the research workshop by Dr. Md. Mahabbat Hossain, Assistant Professor of BIBM on behalf of research team. Other members of the research team are Md. Mohiuddin Siddique, Professor & Director (Dhaka School of Bank Management) of BIBM; Rahat Banu,  Lecturer of BIBM; Kamal Hossain, FCA, Senior Vice President  of Al-Arafah Islami Bank Limited.

A good number of participants including senior bank executives, academicians, media representatives, faculty members of BIBM took part in the research workshop.
According to the BIBM study, effective and optimum use of IT in ICS depends on the availability of IT infrastructure in terms having an adequate combination of IT hardware & software as well as the ability of the bank employee in utilizing the maximum benefit from the IT. The observation and discussion reveals that there is a considerable deficiency in the number of bank employee equipped with required level of IT Competence.
S.M. Moniruzzaman, Chairman of BIBM Executive Committee and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank was present in the research workshop as the chief guest. Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, Supernumerary Professor of BIBM & Former Managing Director of Pubali Bank Limited; Yasin Ali, Former Supernumerary Professor of BIBM; Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor & Director (Training) of BIBM; Md. Monitur Rahman, Deputy Managing Director, IFIC Bank Limited spoke among others at the event.
Deputy Governor said, today the banking system is heavily dependent on technology. From the use of core banking system to the use of internet banking, banks have surged ahead. Why should ICS be left alone in this wonderful journey? Banks can now monitor its different segments through the use of sophisticated IT tools. All the banks of Bangladesh have started the use of IT in proving the internal control system. 

He also said, central bank has also made significant strides in this regard. Bangladesh Bank is always very active in bringing atomization in different possible spheres of banking business on the one, and the development of internal control system through the issuance of different prudential guidelines on the other. Bangladesh Bank is thus assisting our banks in their continuous effort of reshaping banking business in line with the development of IT he added.
Director General of BIBM said, output of the study along with opinions and observations made today will help BB to take future actions.
Barkat-e-Khuda, Dr.Muzaffer Ahmed Chair Professor of BIBM & Former  Professor of Dhaka University said, development of a prudent ICS and proper implementation of it would be supported by different stakeholders, both internal and external. System of internal controls may manual or computerized. In the digitized world, banking process and control thereto may be conducted through IT.
